I do not dispute for a moment Mr Coughtrie's ignorance of the true cause of the disaster, (i.e. the two upright stones in the drain) this I presume will be told him ere long.

Had Mr Coughtrie known of the presence of the upright stones placed across the drain by his own servant, I feel assured he never would have made any claims on Government.
